Lockdown Birthdays - Celebrate, Hide, Ignore or Postpone?

Many people have felt the lows of being restricted in one space, with maybe only four walls to look at. Add to this not being able to see people that are important to you, 'Lockdown' has felt like a very lonely time for most. If you also have a special occasion, birthday or anniversary that you are supposed to celebrate, then cue the feeling of a load of pressure and sadness combined. Do you choose to celebrate, hide, ignore or postpone?

For many people like myself that were born at the start of a decade, 2020 is all about the milestone birthday! A time when most have a different feeling to that of a 'normal' birthday, filled with perhaps even more pressure to start the new period of your life by reflecting on the old and consider what will come of the new. Facing towards a new decade and life in your new age bracket can feel daunting and may bring with it the feeling that you must drastically change your life in some way. The current situation can perhaps make you feel like you are restricted and unable to power on into this new period of your life.

As humans we are attracted to others and we want to know that we are not alone. Even those of us content with our own company, birthdays still bring with them an opportunity for reflection. For that reason I decided to find out how others may feel about a milestone birthday during this time of restricted contact with friends and family due to Covid - 19.

Throughout my career to date I have been fortunate to meet lots of wonderful women, all of whom have influenced me in some way or another and I would particularly like to celebrate them on this blog by adding them as guest bloggers. All have a different perspective from a different milestone age, and approaching the next period of life in their own unique ways.

My first two ladies Jane Gower and Helen Walter offer their perspectives of turning 70 and 60 in 2020 Lockdown. I had the pleasure of first meeting them through my training as a wedding and funeral celebrant. Another part of my life, which I may talk more about in the future.
